Alexandra Bailliere has painted Rodeo Beach and the Marin headlands many times, returning the way one returns to a conversation that never quite finishes. The south end of the beach is particular — the rocks there are ancient and layered, serpentine and chert tumbled into strange forms by the Pacific, the cliffs behind them rolling in long green waves of their own. To stand there is to feel simultaneously small and completely present. This painting captures exactly that feeling. The great dark sea stack at the centre is painted with a stillness that contrasts with the churning surf below it — pale blue-green water catching the cool coastal light, foam streaking across the pebbly shore. The cliffs behind glow with the particular golden-olive of Marin's dry grass in late afternoon, striped with warm rust and shadow. There is no human figure here, and yet the painting is full of presence — the presence of a place that has been deeply, attentively seen. Bailliere's training in direct observation, refined across years of plein-air work on these very shores, gives the painting its quiet authority. This is not a postcard view but an encounter — the kind of painting that puts you back at the water's edge every time you look at it.
