You know the feeling — you're driving the back roads of Marin, maybe headed toward Muir Beach or cutting through the hills above Mill Valley, when suddenly a hillside ambushes you with yellow. Not polite yellow. Ferocious, insistent, take-over-the-whole-field yellow. That's the Bermuda buttercup, an invasive oxalis that California tried to resist and eventually gave up on, and Alexandra Bailliere has been painting it with the devotion of someone who understands that beauty doesn't always arrive where it's supposed to. In this painting, she moves close — very close — letting three blooms fill the foreground like faces turning toward the light. They are painted with a botanist's attention and a painter's freedom, the petals broad and saturated, the stamens detailed with quick, confident marks. Behind them, the field opens up and becomes something more impressionistic: a shimmer of yellow and green that recalls both Monet's meadows and the flat chromatic fields of Color Field painting, held in tension by the soft lavender haze of another wildflower species drifting in from the upper right. This is how Bailliere works — moving between what she sees and what she feels, between the specific and the atmospheric, between the overlooked corner of a hillside and the larger truth that the places we pass without stopping are often the most alive. To stand in front of this painting is to be asked to slow down, to look again, to find the extraordinary in what grows without permission.
