There is a particular quality of light in a garden at peak summer — a greenness so deep and layered it almost hums. This is the light Alexandra Bailliere has chased here, standing before a garden that has grown beyond any plan, where tall plants lean across one another, where flowers appear in the understory like small discoveries. She paints not the tidy garden of a catalogue but the real one: exuberant, a little wild, full of incongruous beauty. The eye moves through the painting the way you might actually move through such a place — drawn first by the white daisies at the lower left, then pulled inward by that surprising burst of burnt orange, then upward through the vertical spires of magenta and blue toward the great dark mass of trees and, finally, the small release of blue sky at the upper left. It is a painting about abundance and about looking closely enough to find what is extraordinary in the ordinary. Bailliere has long been drawn to the overlooked edges of things — highway verges, coastal rocks, gardens at dusk — and this work continues that conversation. It is rooted in direct observation but freed by gesture and colour into something more than documentation. It is an act of attention, and an invitation to share it.
